In 1901, The Sorg began showing early forms of motion pictures, such as photo plays, and vaudeville performances before the operas. The live shows were discontinued in the late 1920s, and in the summer of 1929 a sound system was installed, turning the Sorg into a full time movie theater. Soon after, the Friends of the Sorg group was formed to reopen it as a live performance venue.

Known throughout Ohio as The Rubi Girls, this dynamic, close-knit troupe of professionals has been performing since the late 1980’s. Comprised of business owners, a filmmaker, a graphic designer, an IT director, a merchandise manager, a make-up artist, cosmetologists, hairstylists, and educators, the group began performing for one another in an attic during college. What started on Rubicon Street has grown into a frenzy for seating arrangements upon the announcement of a show. Romance of Iron and Steel (1938), documents ARMCO’s innovative rolling mill process.
Since this celebration, The Sorg has continued to fill its theatre with a variety of performances and shows. Middletown’s first multi-millionaire, Paul J. Sorg, had the opera house built as a gift to his hometown. Samuel Hannaford, who designed the Cincinnati Music Hall, was hired to design the 1,200-seat opera house. The historic Sorg Opera House is located in the heart of revitalized downtown Middletown.
Its period fixtures, superior acoustics, and excellent sight lines attracted renowned artists from around the country. The open house gave the 150 visitors an opportunity to tour the Sorg, including the balcony, dressing rooms under the stage and its commercial building. The original Sorg Opera House sign that recently was uncovered was displayed in the lobby. Five years ago, the Sorg was named to the 2016 list of Ohio’s Most Endangered Historic Sites, a designation the non-profit organization SORG hoped would help raise money for the building’s rebirth. Hot coming off of the heels of his last sold out comedy tour Tyrus is ready to entertain again with fresh new material but the same old common sense. Kevin Martin, chief curator of library collections at the Hagley Museum and Library, and Sam Ashworth, trustee and past president of the Middletown Historical Society, co-host the event. This performance is made possible in part by generous grants from the Middletown Community Foundation.

The theater is within walking distance from bustling entertainment, breweries, and bars allowing you turn your trip to the Sorg Theater into a whole day of fun. A lifetime Middletown resident, Griffith said she understands why skeptics were leery when it came to the rebirth of the Sorg. She spoke last week to the Rotary Club and the members were surprised when she told them the opera house has no employees. Each tour will include a discussion of the history of the theater, with looks at the exterior features, lobby, theater, balconies, projection booth, backstage and downstairs dressing area. The tour lasts about an hour and a half, and will be led by a SORG volunteer.
They were successful, and ran the theater until 2010, when a water main break forced the opera house to close again. In 2012, the Sorg Opera Revitalization Group (SORG) formed to buy and reopen the building. Ricky Nelson, the original "teen idol," remains a chart topper and trail blazer to this day! The multi-talented Nelson starred along side his family in the TV series The Adventures Of Ozzie And Harriet, co-starred with John Wayne and Dean Martin in Rio Bravo, and placed a whopping 53 songs on the Billboard Hot 100, a new feature at the time. His single "Poor Little Fool" is considered to be the first number one song on the chart. After 19 more top ten hits, he was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 1987 and is ranked #49 on TV Guide's 50 Greatest TV Stars Of All Time.
Count Down to Start Up (1970) follows the start-up process of ARMCO’s first fully automatic cold strip steel mill in Middletown. Their vision was to restore the building back to a beautiful and thriving theatre; filling the grand ballroom with patrons, entertainers, educators, and employees. Art Central Foundation is pleased to welcome the incomparable Rubi Girls to the stage of the historic Sorg Opera House for our annual Drag Me to Brunch fundraiser this year! We anticipate a big crowd for this one, so brunch will be an add-on ticket to the show with limited availability and will be held at Art Central Foundation's event space. The Rubi Girls will be performing a PG13 show for us, just like the movies, so content is appropriate for those 13 and over if accompanied by a parent. Whether he’s tackling the issues of race and activism in America today or confronting his past with stories of family, relationships, wrestling, and more, this is pure Tyrus at his unbridled best. The parallels he draws between current culture and his personal past are insightful, provocative, and profound.
