The theater is within walking distance from bustling entertainment, breweries, and bars allowing you turn your trip to the Sorg Theater into a whole day of fun. A lifetime Middletown resident, Griffith said she understands why skeptics were leery when it came to the rebirth of the Sorg. She spoke last week to the Rotary Club and the members were surprised when she told them the opera house has no employees. Each tour will include a discussion of the history of the theater, with looks at the exterior features, lobby, theater, balconies, projection booth, backstage and downstairs dressing area. The tour lasts about an hour and a half, and will be led by a SORG volunteer.

Signs of Life: The American Pink Floyd
Since this celebration, The Sorg has continued to fill its theatre with a variety of performances and shows. Middletown’s first multi-millionaire, Paul J. Sorg, had the opera house built as a gift to his hometown. Samuel Hannaford, who designed the Cincinnati Music Hall, was hired to design the 1,200-seat opera house. The historic Sorg Opera House is located in the heart of revitalized downtown Middletown.

Hot coming off of the heels of his last sold out comedy tour Tyrus is ready to entertain again with fresh new material but the same old common sense. Kevin Martin, chief curator of library collections at the Hagley Museum and Library, and Sam Ashworth, trustee and past president of the Middletown Historical Society, co-host the event. This performance is made possible in part by generous grants from the Middletown Community Foundation.

Griffith said the Sorg is important to the community because it provides local theater enthusiasts an opportunity to see local productions and it’s an economic driver for downtown businesses. There are 17 musical shows scheduled for the rest of the year and seven so far in 2022. Puppy Pals is a nationally touring family fun, action-packed show where adopted and rescued dogs perform spectacular stunts and breathtaking feats onstage before your very eyes! Watch spellbound as we lead the puppies and audience through challenging and comical tricks, as the pooches show everyone who is really boss!

Wesley Williams leads the puppies through a show full of surprises and laugh-out-loud canine comedy. Join Tyrus for a Meet & Greet after the show where you can get a photo and autograph. His New York Times best selling memoir “Just Tyrus” and pre-order “Nuff Said” which comes out in November will be for sale at the event as well. Proceeds from the concert and 50/50 raffle will benefit Middletown Rotary’s charitable projects which include helping local children through school based programs and community organizations like Sleep In Heavenly Peace and Abilities First.

ThunderBeard is the ultimate ZZ Top tribute band that authentically recreates the live experience of the legendary band. ThunderBeard will have you singing along to classic hits such as “La Grange,” “Tush,” and “Sharp Dressed Man” as well as many other classics from throughout the band’s 50+ year history. I think it’s for the next generation to be able to come in and see this kind of stuff," Chuck Miller, SORG President, told the Cincinnati Business Courier. In January 1935, a fire caused $10,000 worth of damage— which would have been $185,298 today— which caused The Sorg to close for several months. The Sorg closed again for a remodel in the late 1940s and a false ceiling was added, separating the upper balcony from the the rest of the theater to improve the sound. A historical gem with 100+ years of performances and standing ovations.

Its period fixtures, superior acoustics, and excellent sight lines attracted renowned artists from around the country. The open house gave the 150 visitors an opportunity to tour the Sorg, including the balcony, dressing rooms under the stage and its commercial building. The original Sorg Opera House sign that recently was uncovered was displayed in the lobby. Five years ago, the Sorg was named to the 2016 list of Ohio’s Most Endangered Historic Sites, a designation the non-profit organization SORG hoped would help raise money for the building’s rebirth. The Puppy Pals LIVE Comedic Stunt Dog Show is a hilarious presentation for the whole family and the dog lover in all of us, and this special fun-filled spectacle stars mostly rescued dogs. From shelters to showbiz, these pooches perform spectacular stunts and breathtaking feats.
